Consumer Alert (November/December 2009) – Fake Aviva cheques attempt to
defraud consumers

Canadian Consumers are advised of a current fraud scheme. Cheques containing the Aviva logo and markings are being sent to consumers, along with a letter explaining that the funds are a reimbursement of taxes to be paid on non-existent cash prizes.

Please note that these cheques are fake and do not originate from Aviva Canada Inc. or any Aviva affiliated company – do not cash these cheques.

The fraud scheme also uses logos and mentions of other well-known consumers brands.

How such frauds typically work
· Consumers are asked to contact an agent responsible for the winnings.
· During contact, consumers will be asked for pre-payment of the taxes on the
winnings with the promise that the cheque from Aviva will pay them back.
· Once payment is made to the agent, all contact will cease and the cheque they
sent to you will not clear.

This is an attempt to steal your money.
