Top 10 Streetproofing Tips for Babysitters

As professional insurance brokers we can do many things to help protect your physical assets, but protecting our mostprecious treasures - our children, requires awareness on the Babysitters part. Here are the top ten streetproofing tips forbabysitters. Follow these rules and stay safe.

Never take children to lonely parks, woods, parking lots or even school yards at any time, particularly late afternoon or evening.

When taking children to after school activities, work out the bestroute with their parents to avoid unsafe places. Be sure to stick tothat route every time and know where your neighbourhood Block Parents are located.

Say “NO” to anyone who invites you and the children you’re incharge of into their home or car, unless your employer has given you permission and knows exactly where you are.

If someone grabs you or the children you are taking care of, scream loudly and keep screaming. Yell out “Help! Kidnap”. If screaming doesn’t work, tell the child to spin around fast. This makes it hard for someone to hold on to them.

If you take an elevator to or from your babysitting job, always stand by the control panel in case of emergency.

Always listen to your instincts. You know best. If something feels wrong it probably is.

Make certain there is a message centre in every home you babysit. The centre must include important information such as a number where parents can be reached, the children’s routes home from school, friends phone numbers, emergency numbers and the location of health cards.

Get clear directions from your parents and your employer as to rules regarding answering the door or answering the telephone.

If you’re in trouble, ask for help. Safe people to choose may be a police officer, a firefighter, a paramedic, a Block Parent, mothers or fathers with children, teachers, uniformed bus or subway drivers or store clerks. Always keep the children with you.

If you and the children find yourselves in a situation that feels uncomfortable, get out of it …FAST!
